TERRA DE SÃO FRANCISCO - Brasil Specialty Coffee

The Mello family's work in coffee began, improbably, with a trip to Italy in 2015.  Clóvis Mello, a filmmaker, was working on a script about Brasilian medium Divaldo Franco.  His film preparation took him to Assisi, Italy- the home of Saint Francis.  In his search for the inspiration to finish his movie script, Clóvis found the inspiration to begin a radically different project.  Returning home to Brasil, Clóvis shared with his son Felipe his desire to farm coffee.  His son Felipe’s excitement at the project matched his own and at Felipe’s insistence they decided their coffee farm should be organic, sustainable and follow the principles of biodynamic farming.  Together they bought a farm in Carmo de Minas and the project began.

Terra de São Francisco is the realization of Clóvis and Felipe’s inspiration.  The farm is intended to sustainably produce the finest quality coffee using only organic amendments- the majority of which are produced on the farm.  Less than one fifth of the land is dedicated to coffee production.  The farm benefits especially from Carmo de Minas’ unique geography.  Set in the Mantiqueira mountains Terra de São Francisco has rich volcanic soil and access to fresh spring water.  Many varieties of coffee are grown here and all work- from planting to picking to processing is done by hand. 

This lot of coffee is composed of Arara, Mundo Novo and Yellow Catuaí varieties and is processed in the natural method.  Freshly picked ripe coffee cherries are slowly dried under the sun before the coffee fruit is separated from the inner coffee seeds.  This coffee is very sweet and buttery with notes of chocolate, cherry and pear and a delicate rosy glow.  Please enjoy Terra de São Francisco!
