Cooperativa La Asunción is a community of about 25 smallholder coffee farmers from the village of San José Poaquil, Guatemala. San José Poaquil is a village of predominantly Kaqchikel Maya peoples in the department of Chimaltenango in Guatemala’s western highlands. The cooperative is a legacy of the Morales family- who also brought the Bourbon varietal to the region in the 1980’s. The cooperative began in 1969 with Don Tomas Morales Chitic’s unification of family farms and land parcels. These farmlands were a legacy of his grandfather, Don José Morales, whose land holdings were the result of a lifetime working in agriculture- egg and coffee production. Cooperativa la Asunción is the realization of Don José’s lifetime of work in bringing the region’s coffee to market and improving the lives of those involved in the production of coffee. The co-op’s coffee production supports their community development projects, education initiatives and programs empowering women and young producers.

Cooperativa la Asunción picks fresh coffee cherries and processes in the washed method daily. This lot of coffee is a blend of our favorite daily harvests with fresh fruit and sweet caramel flavors. It is a blend of Bourbon, Typica, Caturra and Catuaí coffees grown on the co-op’s farms between 1,800 and 1,950 M.A.S.L. The high elevation, rich volcanic soil, quality varietals and generation knowledge of coffee production all contribute to a very sweet, rich and satisfying cup of coffee.
