Our Kenya Gatina selection is a complex, bright and floral coffee sourced from smallholder farmers in the Nyeri County region. These farmers- of which 30% are women- each grow only a few hundred coffee trees on small plots of land. Cultivation and picking are performed meticulously by each family and freshly picked coffee cherries are delivered to the Gatina Factory just south of the town of Karatina. The Gatina Factory, part of the Nyeri-based Mugaga Farmers’ Cooperative Society, selectively buys and processes its members’ coffee cherries in the traditional Kenyan washed method. Coffee cherries are depulped on the day they are picked and delivered to the factory. They are then fermented under fresh river water in clean tanks overnight, washed, soaked and dried on raised beds.
Karatina is a town located in the volcanic mountains of the Aberdare Range south of Mt. Kenya. Here the cool nights, high elevation, volcanic soil, perfectly adapted Kenyan coffee cultivars and the meticulous attention paid to each step of coffee production contribute to an exceptionally dynamic and delicious coffee. We are happy to roast and share this SL28, SL34, Ruiru and Batian lot selection. We love its complex, perfumy and bright flavors and its immaculately clean and transparent nature. From the slopes of Mt. Kenya, please join us in savoring this exceptionally delicious coffee.
