Kangocho AA - Kenya Specialty Coffee
During harvest months, smallholder farmers with an average of only 300 coffee trees bring their freshly picked ripe coffee cherries to Karatina’s Kangocho Factory for processing. These farmers grow tried and true SL28 and SL34 varieties of coffee alongside a new variety, Batian.
Coffee cherries are depulped and fermented under water overnight before being washed,
soaked, washed and finally dried under shade on raised beds. Meticulous care in processing is the norm in Kenya and this care combined with Kenya’s amenable geographic and environmental conditions combine to produce coffees of the highest distinction and earn the respect of coffee lovers the world over.
SL28 and SL34 are varieties unique to Kenya. The “SL” distinction refers to Scott Agricultural Laboratories which developed them specifically for Kenya from the more common Bourbon variety. These trees make use of every bit of Kenya’s exceptional coffee producing conditions- high elevation with hot days and cool nights, volcanic soil, ample fresh water and highly organized and diligent processing centers- to produce exceptionally sweet coffees with bright fruit forward acidity and a full bodied mouthfeel. Batian is a more recently developed variety. It was created in Kenya and named after the highest peak on Mt Kenya. It is prized by producers for its resistance to coffee berry disease and coffee leaf rust while upholding the all important quality attributes.
We love this coffee for its classic Kenyan profile of black currant, honey and lemon. It is creamy, bright and very sweet. From Karatina Kenya, please enjoy Kenya Kangocho.
